For now though, let me introduce you to how one communicates with ancestors. As far as I can remember: ancestors are these greedy spirits that request a lot of things they did not have either while they were alive.

They want a cow slaughtered because they feel cold and somehow blankets and cow skin will warm them up. Very Greedy Spirits, Right? It is difficult because these people are no longer of this world, they are spiritual beings and so communicating with them is different from how we talk to anyone around us.

Idlozi likhuluma ukuze ufeze izidingo zalo, ithongo likhuluma ukuze impilo iqhubekele phambili. Ukukhuluma kweDlozi Idlozi liziveza ngokuthi ligqamise ezokwelapha.

Liyini Idlozi / Ithongo ?

Kulo ke kuphuma izinhlanya ke ezifana nabalozi. Abalozi ke akulula ukuchaza ukuthi bakhuluma ndlelani. Ubaba wami ke naye omunye wabantu abanabalozi, ekukhuleni kwami ke ngikhule impempe whistleikhwelo whistlekanye nokuningi okubanga umsindo onjalo kungashaywa. Ubaba wayethi ubiza abalozi. Ukuthwasa and to be possessed by idlozi has been taken as something evil by its own people and even those who happened to be possessed have tried in many ways to escape from it by denying it. Ukuthwasa is not something new, it has been there even during the times of our forefathers, the only difference now being that in the olden days or primitive times, it was more respected and was also properly done than it is happening today.

Idlozi is an ithongo which possesses someone, and because it has now acted in this manner it gets called idlozi.

Ukukhuluma neThongo

Most of the African Healers have misunderstood this. Besides this a person when at a particular age which is determined by the ancestors themselveswill start seeing some images in her sleeping, sometimes experiences some dreams, which might be like: snakes, big river with clear water, sometimes will see people wearing an African attire, especially that of the Healers and so on.

Other people get sick and become thin others too fat, which is really abnormal, and others suffers from certain deceases. There will be many misfortunes at home if the person is refusing and not responding to the calling — to an extent that they can even bring bad luck to the whole family.

When such symptoms are seen, there is nothing the family can do until the idlozi itself shows you where to go and be initiated. It is IsiNguni and Isindawe. UMnono is not that well and much known in the Kwa-Zulu area hence it has become a huge problem for the African Healers in the area.

They are the only people who clearly know and understand it. The UMnono takes much longer time than the other IsiNguni s pirits to mature. It can take between 10 — 15 years because it does everything on its own and one must be a good reader of the dreams and images as they operate through you. Indiki is another confusing term.

It is completely different from Umndiki which is an ancestral spirit. Once consulted an African Healer uhlanyaand identify what it is and what needs to be done, sickness can come to stop immediately. Isithunywa comes in many forms. There is isithunywa that operates through herbs — impandethe other operates through water, the other through, a prayer all depending on what the gift is. There are those who even mix both the prayer and the herbs- impande. There are people who heal through praying, others through water, others through herbs; it all depends on the type of isithunya that has possessed you.

Once the whole process is completed they will now come or visit you and show you all the impande which you will be using during the healing process.

These herbs — impande is a secret only for your healing practices. During this process the most important and critical thing is the amaphupho -dreams, which they use most of the time communicating with you. It is these dreams- amaphupho which your initiator- ugobela must listen to because they are telling you and him the direction to be taken. Izinhlanya use different types of Indigenous Healing Technologies. There are those who use water, the candles, others bones- amathambo or izinhlolo, and others use amagona- small calabashes umndawe healers whilst others just rely on the ancestors who tells them everything without being assisted by any technology.

It is always the secret of the ancestors idlozi which indigenous technologies one will make use of during the healing and consultation process. A lot of confusion has been happening in our Traditional Healing especially in the usage of certain terminologies.

The most wrongly used word is that of inyanga, which has now been used to refer to all healing people. Similarly with the word Isangoma, where it is used to refer to all people who are practicing African Healing and Spiritualism. I feel it is our responsibility to correct this. Inyanga or izinyanga pl are the owners of impande. It is those people who used to practice healing and died, and now come back and give those who are practicing all the knowledge and secrets about impande.

Izinyanga are the connectors between healing and impande spirits, and also between the living healing practitioners and the spiritual- isithunywa. All African Healers have a hut called isigodlo. This hut is where the amadlozi and izithunywa resides and also a consultation room.I have been grappling in my mind with the idea yobungoma and whether to thwasa or not. However, in order for someone to make a decision on whether to go through the formal thwasa process or not, firstly the concept of ubungoma needs to be clearly defined.

Secondly the stages of the thwasa process and the envisaged outcomes thereof. Buyini ubungoma ngamafuphi?

This means that you come into the world with it and the family does not hold a meeting and decide who is going to be the one. But this calling is innate meaning bungaphakathi kuwena or busegazini as some people would say.

Its not something you go and get from some where neither is it created, you come to this world with it and it stays with you since the day you are born till you soul matures enough that the calling makes it self known to you that it is upon you.

The calling is first and foremost a calling to servanthood, a public servant. Ubizelwe ukuba isikhonzi, isikhonzi sabantu nomphakathi.

You serve people using you abilities and help them on their journey as well. There are numerous signs and symptoms, difficulties and sometimes even illenneses that one goes through before they even get to the level where they realize that they have a calling, accept it and go for thwasa training if they decide to take that path.

Yini ukuthwasa futhi kulindekeleni uma usuphothulile? Zihlukene izindlela ekwenzeka ngazo uma umuntu engenwa idlozi njengoba ngike ngabalula ngenhla. Okokuqala, omunye umuntu uma engenwa idlozi uyagula kakhulu, omunye alandelwe izingozi namashwa, omunye kubhede isimo sempilo yakhe uqobo kuze kuthi uma ethi uya esangomeni noma umthandazi or any other spiritual medium, sifike simtshele ukuthi kudingeka athwase.

Okwesibili, omunye umuntu kuyenzeka ahayize sengathi ungenwe izizwe kanti idlozi elimhayizisayo lifuna aye kothwasa. UGobela lo uzobe eseshisa impepho embika lo ohayizayo osengene la esigodlweni sakhe acele ukuthi abakhulume ukuthi uzengani layikhaya. Okwesithathu, omunye kufika iphupho ekhonjiswa uGobela othile okumele aye kothwasa kuye.

Omunye aphuphe bese eyaqala abuze ukuthi lomuzi KaloGobela ongu-sibani bani ukuphi nendawo. The second and third option above look and sound more legitimate, with prommissing prospects that the candidates will come out a good sangoma and this is indeed their spiritual home. Abanye baze baziqhenye basho ukuthi bona bayizangoma zoqobo ngoba beqale indlela eya entwaseni through second and third option above. Kodwa uma umuntu exhumane noGobela ngendlela yokuqala waziyela yena kuyaye kuhluke in the traditional healing fraternity and tend to get a second class rating.

By this time normally the candidate is eager, sick and very exhausted and troubled emotionally. Ukuthwasa process involves briefly some of the following activities or stages. Generallyuyangqongqoza which means to knock and seek admission, uvume idlozi where you accept the calling, then uphothule which is the graduation ceremony.

Please not that this is a rough sketch and I will not go in to detailed rituals at each stage. Isangoma nesangoma sithwasisa ngendlela yaso ehlukile kunezinye izangoma kodwa kuvamile ukuthi isangoma senzise amathwasa into efanayo kudliwe nempande efanayo futhi. Uma kunjalo yingani ke uGobela angakuniki impande leyo uyoyidla kini ulapheke njengazo zonke izigulo ezilapheka emakhaya.Amathongo lawa ehlukahlukene. Kukhona idlozi; okusho ukuthi uyise wethwasa.

Kukhona indiki; okusho ukuthi uyisemkhulu wethwasa. Indiki livama ukuhamba kanye nendawe; okunguninakhulu wethwasa. Kuliqiniso ukuthi amabutho nempi yikhona okwakulwela isizwe. Nokho izikhali ezifana neklwa nomkhonto zingeke zakuvika konke, okungahle kuhlasele isizwe, okufana nezifo, amalumbo, imiswazi, imikhokha nokunye okunjalo. Yilapho-ke amandla ezinyanga abefike agqame khona. Ingani ngisho impi leyo, ngeke yahlasela ingazange igonywe yinyanga ngamakhubalo nezintelezi. Empeleni ngisho impilo nemiphefumulo yabantu kwaZulu yayisentendeni yezandla zezanusi ngoba osenukwe yizo wayesiwa kwaNkatha.

Ayikho nakanye inkosi eyake yalibusa elikaMjokwane ingazange ibe nenyanga eqotho eyibhekile neyelaphayo. Njengoba izinyanga zanamuhla zikufundela emaNyuvesi ukwelapha, ezasemandulo zazethwasa.

Ukwethwasa yikho phela ukufundela. Ubudokotela bungafundelwa yinoma ubani onekhanda elilula nonamandla okukhokha izimali zokufunda, kodwa ngesiZulu kwakungenjalo. Kwakwethwasa Iowo kuphela othandwe amathongo akubo; angene kuye asebenze ngaye.

Kungakhathaleki noma yena uyathanda yini ukuba isangoma noma qha. Ekuxoxeni kwami ngizoqala ngezangoma ngoba phela izinyanga lezi zamakhambi zikhanyiselwa yilezi ezibhulayo noma-ke lokho kungesiwo umgomo, kodwa kuyinto eyejwayelekile. Kuyaye kwenzeke ukuba mhlawumbe emzini othile noma ohlotsheni lolo kwakukhona isangoma kodwa sesashona. Kuzohamba kuhambe lesi sangoma sibuye njengethongo sifike sidumbe lowo esimthandayo singene kuye, simnike ubungoma baso lobo.

Lokho akwethusi muntu. Okwethusayo wukuba kuthi ingani emlandweni wokudabuka kohlobo lolo akuzange kube nesangoma, kuyabonakala umuntu othile usengenwa lidlozi. Kokunye kusuke kungelasekhaya konina. Okubuhlungu wukuthi idlozi leli kalingeni kahle kumuntu. Okwesibili okubuhlungu ukuthi lidumba Iowo ongalifuni kakhulu. Okuvamile ukuba lidumbe owesifazane; isangoma sendoda sasiyivela kancane kabi kwaZulu. Sengishilo ngathi ubungoma abungeni kalula; bungena ngesifo.

Umuntu ugula kanzima abuye kwababomvana. Impela umuntu ongenwe lidlozi ugcina eseyisiyabhuyabhana sengathi nekhanda alisathathi kahle. Okubuhlungu ukuthi amathongo lawo awazibiki ukuthi belu awunasifo kodwa uguliswa yiwo.

Kanjalo futhi nababhulayo ngeke balibhule ithongo. Kungaze kwenzeke ukuba kuthi makhathaleni kubekhona inyanga esolayo ukuthi mhlawumbe ungenwe abakini bese ikunika ubulawu obumhlophe uhlanze ngabo.
